Dental emergencies: they can happen when you least expect them to, and they’re often very inconvenient! That said, there are many different types of dental emergencies that you can experience, depending on your overall oral health as well as any previous restorative treatments you might’ve received. One such emergency is a displaced dental bridge, and although it might not seem very urgent, it’s something that you should quickly address. Keep reading to learn more about dental bridges including why they fall out and what you should do when it happens.

What Causes Dental Bridges to Fall Out?

With proper care, dental bridges can last up to 15 years; so why do they sometimes prematurely fail? There are several reasons this can happen, including:

  • Decay under or around the bridge – This is the most common reason for dental bridges falling out. Even though bridges cover most of the supporting tooth, there’s still a small area that’s exposed to food and decay-causing bacteria. This can lead to small cavities forming and expanding until there’s not enough tooth left to support the bridge!
  • An improper bite-pattern – If your bite pattern is irregular, chewing can create awkward pressure points across your dental bridge that will loosen and displace it.
  • Weak, short, or damaged abutment teeth – Your bridge is connected on both sides by your natural teeth. These teeth are called abutment teeth, and if they aren’t strong and healthy, they won’t be able to properly support your bridge. Tooth decay, gum disease, or injuries like cracks and fractures can weaken these teeth and compromise your bridge!

What Should I Do If My Dental Bridge Falls Out?

The very last thing you should do if your dental bridge falls out is panic! Dental emergencies like this are common and can easily be addressed, and you won’t be able to think clearly or act quickly if you’re feeling flustered. That said, you should contact your dentist promptly and inform them of the situation, and they’ll determine when they need to see you.

If you can, save your bridge in a plastic container or Ziploc bag and bring it with you to your appointment. Your dentist will let you know if there’s anything else you need to do in the meantime. You should avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where your bridge was, to prevent further breakage or damage. Also steer clear of extremely hot or cold foods and drinks. Once your dentist has reviewed the situation, they can come up with a gameplan and get your smile back on track.

If your dental bridge falls out, you should know that it’s nothing to worry about and usually something that can easily be corrected. That said, quickly contacting your dentist will ensure that your bridge is properly replaced, and your smile’s beauty and functionality aren’t compromised.
